Writing for the CBR: Guidelines for Contributors

The China Business Review will consider for publication original analyses that address issues relevant to the business environment in China. The CBR publishes articles on all sectors of the Chinese economy and all business issues, from human resources and management to operational issues and broader economic, trade, and investment policy issues. The CBR also accepts reviews of books and other media, as well as shorter pieces (see below).

Copyright

The China Business Review holds the copyright for each article published in the magazine and on the CBR website. We do not accept articles for publication that have been or are being published elsewhere, except at the discretion of the editor. The CBR will grant permission for reprints, without charge for non-commercial use. The CBR can arrange for low-cost reprints.

Submission Details

  • Feature Articles

Potential authors should first submit a detailed outline. Because of the volume of submissions, the CBR may not be able to acknowledge receipt of unsolicited outlines or draft articles or return outlines or articles that are not accepted.

Once the outline has been reviewed and the article accepted for publication, the editor and author will agree on a schedule for publication. Articles should be roughly 2,000 words in length.

Articles are edited prior to publication. Our editors are familiar with a broad range of China issues and will work with authors to develop the article to meet the needs of CBR readers.

Authors should include biographical information. In addition to name and job description, the bio should include some mention of the author's expertise or involvement in the article's subject area.

  • Opportunities Department Submissions

The CBR encourages contributions to Opportunities from organizations that have developed joint US-PRC charitable, cultural, and educational projects that seek US corporate support. Interested organizations should submit full details of your project(s) in this format by e-mail to publications@uschina.org with "Opportunities Submission" in the Subject line.

  • Shorter Features

The CBR also accepts 1,000-word pieces on topics related to daily life in China, e.g. lifestyle issues, entertainment, and culture — of interest to business people.

  • Images and Artwork

Tables, charts, and graphics are welcome; simply providing the relevant raw data is sufficient. Photographs are encouraged and will be returned. Digital photographs should be 300 dpi in JPEG or TIFF format.
